For decades, librarians and researchers of Sussex County have contributed to the Library’s unique Local History and Genealogy collections. Descriptions of special collections at branch libraries are listed below.  A few collections are accessible by appointment only. Please call the branch, or send an email, with any questions you may have.

Surname Index – This index of family surnames is helpful for tracking down research within the Library’s multiple collections. It also references the Sussex County Historical Society’s look-up files. Search the Surname Index
Perlee Collection – This large collection of files was donated to the Library by the Dennis Library Association. Alfred Perlee was a prolific local genealogist whose work has assisted researchers for many decades. This collection is locked. Please determine which surnames you wish to view and the Reference Librarian will pull the files.
Crawn Collection – The donated files of local genealogist Francis S. Crawn have been transferred to microfilm. Names are alphabetically arranged, and each name is found on an "Index Cards" reel and a "Family Files" reel.
Cemetery & Church Vertical File – A collection of transcripts and lists. This file contains information about things like church memberships, baptisms and burials.
Genealogy Vertical File – Information about local family lines, donated by researchers.

Local History

Vertical Files – File drawers at the Main Library contain clippings, brochures, charts, research, publications and ephemera related to Sussex County, and surrounding area, history and genealogy. There are files for each municipality, and for many schools, industries, landmarks, buildings, churches and other regional topics. List of Vertical File Subjects
Maps – The map collection includes multiple unique historic depictions of the county and topographical maps of New Jersey.
Decker Scrapbooks – 14 scrapbooks contain clippings from local newspapers regarding the history of New Jersey and Sussex County. The index is held at the Reference Desk.  
Tocks Island Dam – The Library was a depository for anything published about the Tocks Island Dam Project and a file dedicated to the information remains. Relevant books and reports can be located by searching the library catalog.
Yearbooks and Directories - Use the Library Catalog to determine which years are available.
Newton High School - Aurora; Kittatinny RHS; Franklin HS; High Point; SC VoTech; Hopatcong HS.
Newton City Directory (various years spanning 1895 - 1986).
Periodicals - Genealogical Magazine of New Jersey; Proceedings of the New Jersey Historical Society

Roswell Coles Scrapbooks – This set of binders regarding the history of Vernon Township contains a collection of articles, clippings and interview transcripts, conducted and compiled by Dr. Roswell S. Coles.

Spotlight on Franklin – Memories 1927-1982 – This volume, published by the Historical Yearbook Committee, contains highlights of Franklin High School’s history. Plus, this branch has Franklin HS yearbooks.
Railroads in Franklin – This display of materials related to the history of railroads in Franklin was donated by William R. Truran and includes original telegraph equipment. – Call the library. Viewing is by appointment only.
The Stephens Collection – This informative, unique collection offers authentic materials related to the history of early mining in Franklin and Ogdensburg. Compiled by the late Mr. Frederic J. Stephens, a mining engineer and containing maps, books, pictures, letters and articles. – Call the library. Viewing is by appointment only.
